- The Process of Creating a Portrait -

One of the most pleasant aspects of a portrait commission is the initial stage of meeting a subject and planning the painting. With a client, this is always engaging, as we together, choose a vision for the completed work.

Depending on the client’s availability, the painting is created from live sittings, a unique experience in itself, or from a photo. I take my own photos unless there’s a reason to use one that’s provided to me (as in the case of a posthumous portrait). After a meeting where the pose is discussed, I begin work. There are occasional consultations that ensure a satisfied client. Another option is a portrait sketch which is a less expensive alternative done in one or two sittings in my studio.

When a contract is helpful, it is generally simple and clear.
